Running Mt Victoria, using Vitamin B12

After whinging about not running in my last post, I actually went for a good (enough) run yesterday. After the kids went to school, (for their last day for the year http://cenglish-memento.blogspot.com ), the pre -arranged babysitter arrived to play with Paloma, and Deane and I took off around the tracks of Mt. Victoria. D had not been out running at all for quite a while, so all though we were out for an hour and a half, we did not cover a huge amount of ground. It felt gooooood! I really enjoy running in early summer, the per-fumy scents of certain flowers as we pass, the earthiness of the trees and tracks wafting up…deliciousness! Okay. A good run and it was damn good to be out…not just ‘trudging’.

Being School hols, it will be more difficult for me to get to the gym to do my vital weights work outs. I have to re plan my plan…ha!

I have been drinking carrot juice mixed with a smaller serve of cabbage. I have stopped adding garlic to my juice’s as I read garlic is not that good to drink. One of the side effects are headaches, which I do suffer from. So I am waiting to see(feel) what will happen if anything. My aim with my raw food quest, is to feel the best I can. I will try nearly anything, (after a bit of research).

I am slowly planning my racing..err… okay…participation schedule… for 2009. As usual I want to do absolutely everything, but so far, I will do the tussock traverse in January,  Mt Lowry in March, I would like to do Lyford in April..but who knows…it all gets difficult when there are five children involved. I will definitely to the Capital half. I would like to attempt my first whole marathon later in the year…I am chewing over Sydney or Melbourne. After reading the blog posts from the fabulous women here: http://nztrichicks.ning.com/ , I actually want to do a half iron man. I will talk about this further but the chica’s over at nz tri chicks have really got me wanting to do it. Watch this proverbial space.

I am really kicking the coffee habit in the butt..now I am averaging only one coffee per day. I put this down to mega nutrients in the juice, and enough vitamin B12. I have read that taking B12 helps one when trying to get off caffeine. The extra iron and ‘B’s’ and calcium I am taking is definitely improving my life, the visit to ‘herb’ guy was well worth it.

Today, the first day of the School hols, is raining and windy. They are all still in bed and they can stay for as long as they wish! I will go for a run today. I will do weights twice per week and one balance class during these holidays, (she says determinedly…yet with a tinge of disbelief..).

a good day

the rose in paradise

My day began with me going to bed, earplugs in, at 9.30 last night. Therefore, I woke before the alarm at 5 a.m today.  I lay in bed for a while, not really wanting to get out, actually, I was feeling pretty..blahhhh. So what did I do?! Well…I leaped out of bed like a fit young thing, I flung on my running gear like..er..Deane Karnazes..I ran out the door like one eager beaver…

I find if I act like I want to be, then I do what I want to do…well, it worked this morning.

So I ran my 30 minute circuit. Once home, I sat and meditated for about 10 minutes. It was a serious meditation session, I kept clearing my mind, but Nia Glassie was in my head. I don’t know why, I guess she has been on the news for a while. She was hard to clear.

I then made Deane and I a coffee…followed by a juice of apple carrot and spinach. I had a banana for breakfast. The kids were ‘yelled’ up. Here’s how breakfast goes for the kids.  Izzy has her standard 6 weetbix drowned in boiled water and coated in a tablespoon of raw sugar. Paloma has a sleepy raw oats with milk and sugar. She follows this by eating whatever Deane happens to be having. (Paloma is Deane’s ‘food sidekick’. She eats whatever is on his plate, actually fights him for it. ) Drew makes herself toast, or a fried egg on toast or french toast. She has a cup of tea with god knows how much sugar in it. Rose has water based weetbix, but she only has two.  Harry has toast and muesli with milk and sugar. Writing this I realise our family has far too much sugar.

Once the kids had gone to school, Paloma and I went downstairs. I have decided to walk to the gym rather than taking the car,( a decision based on my ‘slow food, slow life=quality – theory). I have borrowed a pushchair, which Paloma loves. It took me about 50 sweaty minutes to trudge to the gym. I put Paloma in creche and rushed to my ‘balance’ class. I slowed myself down to reap the benefits of the tai chi, Pilate’s, and yoga moves.

After; a friend gave us a lift home and I made  a juice of silverbeet (from my garden), organic apple, organic carrot, garlic and parsley. yummy lunch!

Tonight for tea, I cooked organic beef steak, baked potatoes, puy lentil and grated carrot salad, chickpea and sliced tomato salad, and sliced cucumber. I need to make more variety for the kids. The reason is this: last week, I went down to kiss the Rose goodnight. She seemed a bit angry with me and wouldn’t talk to me properly. After questioning her a tad, I found out that she is sick of going to bed ’empty’, (her words). I have been pretty hard line with the kids in that if they don’t eat what I provide for tea, they don’t get anything else. Rose is Miss Fussy. But, I now realise I must soften. Rose prefers to go hungry rather than eat anything she doesn’t like. So I will make more of a variety and include well…more meat, and potatoes. The Rose is a meat eater so I will cook meat.

I have just juiced green cabbage, apple, carrot, and garlic. Deane and I polished it off. I guess he will fart all night tonight…again. harry-and-3-girls-oct-7-08-033

10k run, yellow skin, moet and olives…

I was out the door at 8.35 on friday evening determined to go on a more substantial run and so it was at 9.25 I returned after a satisfying 10k run. I havnt done the longer runs for a while and it feels good. I promise myself my next long run will be my 18k circut.

Deane told me I have a slight yellow tinge to my skin. This is due to the amount of carrots I am inhaling either juiced or raw. I cant see it myself…I think I look healthy…maybe with a slight tan..maybe(?). Today we took the kids for a bush walk up the belmont trigg. It was a different experience walking so slowly (at the three year olds pace). Suffice to say, we did not make it up to the trigg, after two hours we were still only half way and the kids were starting to niggle about food. We turned back and had to take turns carrying the smallest person on our shoulders. She was so tired she fell asleep up on Deanes shoulders, her head dreaming on the top of his. Her hair wild about his face.

This morning I woke to the somewhat ‘gentle’ sound of my love breathing through his nose. His nose must have had gravel and sand up it or something – I had to get out of bed and settle on the couch. It was 5am however, so all in all a good sleep. I felt a tad seedy after enjoying a small celebration moet or two last night. Our lovely friends from across the road invited us into their home for a toast to our upcoming marriage. Cold moet, olives, a champagne cocktail or two, laughs and we were home by 11.30p.m. The kids were still up hovering around a computer screen and the nintendo. To bed – soft sleep the household fell within half an hour of our return.

I did not run this morning (as was the plan). Alcohol seems to suck resolve out of me. However, I was able to get Harry and I out of the house and to the market by 8am. We hunted down our fruit and veg, Harry’s prize being his pain-au-raisin, paper bagged and sticky. After we did our sneaky cafe break at Maranui where I enjoyed a soy latte and he a gingerbeer. The day is overcast but not a fluff of wind. Not one fluff!!! I know! ‘Tis hard to imagine wellington with out the fluff!  If I werent feeling so blaaaahhhh, a small run would be perfect…." yawn...don't feel like runnin'.."
