My famous bike ride, (in my head) was followed by four runs and a couple of weights sessions. I am following an Arthur Lydiard marathon training programme. He has me running seven days a week….ummm. for example,  this week, in accordance with Mr. L, on Monday I..err..did not run..I just did a rather sad leg weight/strength workout, then had a coffee. On Tuesday, I ran for thirty minutes. The day following I did my Les Mills balance class, followed by a 35 minute run. On Thursday I ran for forty five minutes andfelt good. Friday saw Deane and I out for a teeny 35 minute run. Saturday and I was running around after kids, followed by a gig at the Wellington jazz festival. Nothing like a bit of Polish trumpet. And then there was Sunday,where for the first time, my sisters and I were all in the same town…so we met at the bottom of my stairs and I took them for an hour plus run over the hills of Mt Victoria and around the bay. Hmmm…bit of fun.

I am now training for a full marathon, haven’t sorted one yet, (any suggestions?) Before that, I will do the great forest half . It is not far from Levin and, of course, we run through a beautiful forest on a carpet of leaves. Sounds dreamy huh? It will be my third time running it and I hopeplan to do 1.50. This will take place in April. Mr lydiard and I will continue with the marathon plan, with the half’s basically being training runs for the ‘big one’. By the way, the book I am reading (with ‘plan’) is  Distance Training for Women athletes by Lydiard/Gilmour. Some of this book is a tad ‘quaint’, i.e …..About the only problem some women have is that they get so wide in the hips that they can no longer bring their legs through as fast as the slimmer-hipped women. But this does not stop wide hipped women from producing exceptional times and performances....

I am one of those wide hipped women and ummm…i wanna  produce exceptional times…oh..and don’t forget…performances.

Seriously, it is a good book. I have all respect for the man. As regarding nutrition…after the longish run on Sunday, I bought croissants for the family from Moore Wilsons. I took them home, and realised one kid was playing at a friends, so I ate hers. I dont usually eat any bread product or of course dairy product…being…errr..vegan. But there I was..it tasted damn good. Harry said he did not want his because he is ‘being healthy’. (he is eleven years old.) So..yep..you guessed it. I ate his too. My sister was laughing at me. I really dont consume shite like that…yeah right..i hear you mutter.  The croissants didn’t feel bad anyhow, in fact, physically I felt very energetic and chirpy. White flour usually drags me down, bloats and grumps me up.  Anyway, I have been enjoying at least one carrot beet cabbage etc juice per day. Am loving my grated carrot etc salads. I have been eating probably only 50% raw food. My goal is to improve the stats and inhale more fresh veg and fruit. My vitamen supplements are working for me and I am have more general energy. I have begun a soy protein supplement also as I don’t eat any animal product. My nutrition is on the up-and-up. I think the older I get the more careful I have to be. Not that I am…ahem…old/er.

Oh. You know how the kids were going to do the ‘gut buster’. Well, it was chaos on that particular morning. I had all five of them in the car, (finally), shoes, jackets, change of clothes, toys (for the three year old ) etc. Long story short, I got lost and could not find ben burn park where the race started. I was rather …errr…not happy about my hopeless sense of direction..and after apologising to the dissapointed kids, took them to Maranui for breakfast, followed by the kilbirnie festival. I know! Useless!!!

Excersise and health goals….veganning again..

I have been slightly haphazard with my goals…(is ‘slightly haphazard’ like being ‘slightly pregnant‘?-you either ARE, or you are NOT.) Anyhow, I was definitely going to do the Taupo challenge, but then decided not to, (because I just didn’t get on my bike to train..at all.) I was also very enthusiastic regarding the ‘Goat’ mountain run. I Was absolutely going to do that one! I even emailed the organisers of the goat and told them how unhappy I was that this year it was running the exact same day as the Taupo challenge!…How could people like me, I exclaimed, make a choice between the two!? Both were great races and I thought the goat should change their day..er…for ME. Consequently, they did and of course, ashamedly, I did not enter either one. The Taupo bike race is this Saturday and the Goat is next Saturday. Now all I can do is re-live my ‘glory’ from the year before and plan to train for them next year. deanes-hol-07-and-goat-weekend-07-243 

What I have to do therefore, is sit down and really think about my training goals-properly. I started this by buying a spiral notebook and a training diary for next year. Into the notebook I will write out my weeks exercisegoals, weights plan (reps etc) and then how I felt physically and emotionally. Into the training diary I will write what I’ve done. I have had a training diary for two years now, this years reads like an old Lady’s…its  full of…”ran 30mins”, or just “balance class”. I have completed in good time a few half marathons and a mountain run, but the training was indiscriminate. Yes folks, I have lost FOCUS. And I am determined to get it back.

So, my next race goal is the ‘tussock traverse’, running on the 27th of January. I will keep you, dear avid readers of my life-updated. I have begun training by, after doing weights at the gym, instead of having a coffee, I have gone for a 45 minute run. I could go for an hour before I need to pick Paloma from creche, but so far, 45 is my limit. It is all in my head.

As for nutrition, I am trying to sort it. Lately I have been a bit lightheaded when doing weights, or during and after a run..so much so that I slow down, or sit down because, it would be very embarrassing to actually faint.  To counteract this, I have begun slow release irontabs. I think I am feeling a bit more energetic..maybe a little less tired. I have juice at least twice per day, raw salads and have been having more protein in the form of couscous, quinoa and lentils and rice. It seems to be a fine line, and a much thought out one- to be able to get my vegan/raw nutritional level at the right level with my exercise lifestyle. I don’t want to feel weak, or faint..obviously. Maybe I will buy another note book to write it all down..umm…I have so many notebooks, i write about stuff I read, think, scribble little drawings of painting’s I will do, lists of things I want for the kids..etc..yeah..so whats one more note book huh?
